about

The Orchestra of the Unwanted

The Orchestra of the Unwanted is a collection of unique musical instruments I built from recycled materials, found objects, circuit-bent electronic toys and thrift store finds. These instruments do not look or sound very impressive on their own, but these very crude musical instruments with their thin, weak and coarse voices, work together to conjure dark spirits suitable to accompany black magic, demonic possession, reanimation of the dead, or the pursuit of immortality through any of the dark arts.

The Orchestra of the Unwanted currently includes the following instruments:

Strings: tin can fiddle, tin can bass fiddle, happy polynesian fiddle, record breaking guitar, 3 string steel guitar, harp project, rubber band harp

Percussion: spring guitar, spring box, mixing bowl bells, tiny bell tree, roasting pan gong, electric refrigerator rack, electric thunder strip, bow saw kalimba, rainstick, Rick Hinton's rattles

Wind: alto and soprano recorder, Humboldt Horn, didgeridoo

Electronics: Geosafari Modular Analog Synthesizer, Circuit-bent Casio ML1 toy keyboard, Omnichord, yard lamp optical theremin, magnetic tape-head circuit-bent green kawasaki toy keyboard, circuit-bent pink “Staring Me” toy keyboard.

You can see pictures of all of the instruments, and find out more about my music at:

John Hardin/Tin Can Luminary San Francisco, California

John Hardin lives Off-Grid deep in the forest in Northern California where he produces original music in a solar powered studio. He makes many of his own instruments from recycled materials and found objects. He seeks to transcend civilization through music, so he rejects musical traditions born of civilized culture and instead cultivates wild, feral, and untamed musical impulses. ... more
